Spa Membership vs Loyalty Points:
Which One Actually Builds Recurring Revenue?
"A loyalty points program rewards clients for what they already did. A membership program gives them a reason to show up before they even decide."
Two Models, Very Different Outcomes
If you have been running a spa for more than a year, you have probably considered some form of client rewards program. Maybe you have a punch card. Maybe you have a points system built into your booking software. Maybe you have been thinking about launching a membership but have not been sure whether it is worth the setup.
The question most spa owners are really asking is simple: which one actually makes me more money and keeps clients coming back longer?
The answer is not close. But understanding why requires looking at what each model actually does to client behavior, not just what it promises on paper.
How Loyalty Points Programs Work
A loyalty points program gives clients points for every dollar they spend. Accumulate enough points and they can redeem them for a discount, a free service, or a product.
On the surface it sounds like a strong retention tool. Clients are earning something every time they visit, which should motivate them to return.
In practice the psychology works differently. Points programs reward past behavior. The client gets points after they have already spent money. The incentive is backwards looking. There is nothing in a points program that creates urgency to visit, a reason to come in this month rather than next month, or a sense of loss if they do not show up.
Points also accumulate slowly. A client spending $100 per visit at a 5 percent earn rate accumulates $5 in points per visit. At that rate it takes 20 visits to earn a $100 reward. Most clients never reach a meaningful redemption threshold. The program runs in the background, largely ignored, and does very little to change the frequency of visits.
The final problem with points is that they create a discount expectation. Clients begin to mentally subtract their points value from every purchase. The perceived price of your services drops without any corresponding increase in visit frequency or loyalty.
How Spa Membership Programs Work
A spa membership program charges a fixed monthly or annual fee in exchange for defined services, credits, or benefits.
The psychology is fundamentally different. A member has made a financial commitment before they walk through the door. That commitment creates a pull toward your spa that no points program can replicate. A member who is paying monthly has a built-in reason to show up and use what they are paying for. The perceived cost of not visiting is real and immediate.
Memberships also change how clients think about additional spending. A member who has already paid their monthly fee is more likely to add a treatment, upgrade a service, or purchase a retail product during their visit because the primary cost has already been mentally accounted for. The additional spend feels smaller relative to the value they are already receiving.
The compounding effect is significant. A client on a $99 per month membership who visits consistently and adds $40 in retail or upgrades per visit generates $1,668 per year in revenue. The same client on a points program, visiting four times per year at $100 per visit, generates $400. Same client. Completely different revenue outcome based entirely on the model you chose.
THE REVENUE DIFFERENCE
4X
Supporting line: Spa members generate up to 4 times more annual revenue per client than non-members visiting on a pay-per-visit basis.
Where Loyalty Programs Still Have a Role
Loyalty points are not useless. They serve a specific purpose in a well-structured spa business: rewarding high-frequency non-members and creating a stepping stone toward membership.
If a client visits consistently but has not yet committed to a membership, a points program keeps them engaged and gives you a natural conversation starter. When their points balance reaches a meaningful threshold, that is the moment to introduce the membership conversation. Frame it as an upgrade, not a replacement. Show them what they would have earned as a member versus what they earned through points. The math usually closes the sale.
The mistake most spas make is treating the loyalty program as a retention strategy rather than a conversion tool. Points should exist to move clients toward a membership, not to substitute for one.
Making the Switch From Points to Memberships
If you currently run a points program and are considering launching a membership, the transition does not need to be disruptive. You do not need to shut down the points program immediately or force existing clients into a new model against their preference.
The approach that works is launching the membership as a premium option available alongside the existing program. Position it as an upgrade for your best clients, the ones who visit most frequently and spend the most. Those clients already see the value in your services. They are the easiest to convert and they will become your most vocal advocates for the membership model once they experience the difference.
From there, the membership sells itself through results. Members visit more. They spend more. They refer more. Other clients see that and want the same experience.
The 247 Routine System is built to support exactly this kind of transition. We design the membership structure, set up the billing, build the onboarding sequence, and give your members a branded app that keeps them connected to your spa between every visit. The points program does not need to disappear overnight. The membership just needs to be so clearly better that clients choose it themselves.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Loyalty points reward past behavior. Memberships create future commitment.
- Members generate significantly more annual revenue than pay-per-visit clients on the same spend pattern.
- Points programs work best as a conversion tool into membership, not as a standalone retention strategy.
